Discussion Question 4

There are at least 2 scenes in this novel that I will never forget. Amir definitely develops the courage to confront evil after he becomes an adult. The courage that he lacks as a child haunts him throughout his life. How do you think the story would have been different if he had confronted the evil Assaf in the alley as a child?

Discussion Question 3

Amir's confrontation with Assef in Wazir Akar Khan marks an important turning point in the novel. Why does the author have Amir, Assef, and Sohrab all come together in this way? What is this the significance of the scar that Amir develops as a result of the confrontation? Why is it important in Amir's journey toward forgiveness and acceptance?

Discussion Question 2

Discuss Amir's relationship with Baba. How does it change after he wins the tournament? How does it change after they arrive in America? How does it change after Baba gets sick?

Discussion Question 1

Read the article on the Hazara's at the National Geographic link to the right. What insight did you get on Hassan and his relationship with Amir?
